What Cloud Children's Grief Books

Kim Vesey, Author

Walking the path with children who are grieving the death of a dear loved one (mom, dad, sibling, grandparent, and/or pet) is emotional and often unchartered territory for adults.

In addition to being a frequently requested speaker, Kim Vesey is also an author. Kim’s first book, “What Cloud Is My Mommy In?” was written in memory of her daughter Sarah, and in honor of her grandson, Warren. This is the first book in a series of seven children’s books on grief. In 2021, the book received the Christian Indie Award for children’s books.

Following the death of her daughter, Kim struggled with how uncomfortable adults were with being able to talk and listen about the deceased. Her grandson, Warren, was among those facing this dilemma when he wanted to talk about his mom. Someone told Warren that his mom was in heaven after she died. He asked if he could go visit her. He was told no, as heaven was far away, it was in the clouds. One day he asked his grandmother (Kim), “What Cloud Is My Mommy In?” The inspiration for the title of her first book was born.

Warren’s questions and emotions about grief became the driving force behind Kim writing a series of books for grieving children about different familial losses.

The series has grown to include subsequent books with similar titles:

“What Cloud Is My Daddy In?” “What Cloud Is My Sister In?”
“What Cloud Is My Grandma In?” “What Cloud Is My Brother In?”
“What Cloud Is My Grandpa In?” “What Cloud Is My Pet In?” is set to soon release.

The What Cloud book series carries a common theme. Illustrator Amy Gantt’s, Lula Bell, What Cloud turtle is the feature character in all of the books. Each starts with an introduction to grief, with a specific emphasis on children’s grief.

The mommy, daddy, grandma, and grandpa versions of the books are nearly identical. They walk the child—and the adults who love them—through the first year of grief. Each version explores ways to honor the child’s loved one on holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter), Mother’s Day, mom’s birthday, and the child’s birthday.

The sister and brother books are about three turtles who meet at grief camp. Two of the turtles have memories of their sibling. However, the third turtle has no memories as his sibling died at birth. Together they learn that their siblings will always be in their hearts and they can stay connected with them through their thoughts, prayers, and with the love in their hearts.
